History
of the Club
Over
the years the club has undergone changes in name and venues
until it was settled in April 1970 in its current site on
reclaimed land beside the harbour in Maidens
under its present name. The clubhouse was built in that year
by the members.
In
the past 5 years, the kitchen and the toilets have been upgraded,
an extension has been built giving a locker room, store room
and club lounge and the whole clubhouse, inside and outside,
has been redecorated.
New
artifical bankings were installed in 1999, tarmac path surrounds
a year later and this, together with an automatic sprinkler
system and the very mild, dry, south Ayrshire climate make
Maidens Bowling Green one of the finest in Ayrshire and the
whole of Scotland.
Maidens
is a beautiful little coastal village with a lovely long sandy
beach and grass foreshore. The harbour, like many west coast
harbours, was originally built for fishing but today is mainly
used by those who sail for pleasure.
The
village retains an old world air of peace and tranquility
and is a favourite spot for artists and camera enthusiasts.
It
was at Maidens that Robert the Bruce landed when he sailed
from Rathlin Island.
The
village is extremely popular and has five caravan parks and
many day-trippers come to enjoy the beach area, the car parking,
landscaped picnic area and equipped play area, not to mention
the beautifully kept bowling green.
